New Format for 2022: Narrative | Guided Rides | Not timed

There is nothing quite like thrill of competition and a big mission to make you feel alive. This probably accounts for the proliferation of races on the mountain bike calendar.

While the anticipation of a big event and the attendant motivation to train hard and race harder can be really exhilarating, sometimes what we actually need is a chance to take our foot off the gas and quiet that driving need to be “better”. Taking time to acknowledge ourselves for where we are now, deepens our sense of appreciation. Living with a sense of appreciation enables us to exist in an atmosphere of abundance rather than want.

Ridetheberg 2022 is a reset – a change in format from a race weekend to a restorative weekend away with great riding, beautiful nature and plenty of time for rest and reflection. Non riding friends and family are welcome

Venue

The ride will be hosted at Montusi Mountain Lodge, an exclusive 4 star lodge in the Northern Drakensberg of KZN. The Lodge offers glorious accommodation in beautifully appointed suites set in open gardens, each offering breathtaking views of the Drakensberg’s Amphitheatre. Montusi is renowned for sumptuous local cuisine, and all meals are included in the getaway. Montusi is spectacularly situated in the heart of the Drakensberg Trails network, with access to the trails directly from the Lodge.

Itinerary

The pace of the weekend will be relaxed and social, with welcome drinks at the dam at sunset on Friday night. Dinner will be served in the dining room and can be enjoyed at leisure. Saturday will start bright and early with a Sunrise Yoga session, followed by delicious Montusi breakfast and a brilliant full morning ride.
The ride will depart at 9:30am, and cover a distance of +- 40kms of mountainous single track. Routes will be guided, and a narrative will be available for those who prefer to take life at their own pace. Our guides are keen mountain bikers who can’t wait to share their love of riding in this beautiful area with you. Provision will be made to split the groups so different levels can be accommodated. There will be a mid morning stop for cappuccinos and scones, with the ride returning to Montusi in the early afternoon. A light lunch will be served and the afternoon will be free for a dip in the pool or an afternoon snooze. A second yoga session will be offered in the late afternoon to loosen up any stiff muscles and joints. Dinner Saturday night will be followed by moonlit stroll to the dam for a bonfire and a chance to share the experiences of the day.

Breakfast on Sunday will be from 7am, with the ride leaving at 8:30. Once again this will be a guided ride, with provision to split the group, and the narrative for the lone rangers. Sunday’s route will be shorter, around 30km, to get us back for a quick lunch and early afternoon departure, enabling a leisurely drive home.

  3. Hi there
I’be tried to log onto the enter now link but it comes up with a 503 error message.

  4. Hi Loretta,
If there is a cancellation, let me know as I’d like to ride.
Locals are a bit slow compared to our Gauteng fellow riders.

    Thanks,

    Harko

    1. Hi Charl
There are still entries and accommodation is separate to the entry. Riders book in at an accommodation venue if their choice and then come and ride each day from All Out Adventures. Please have a look at the accommodation page for accommodation options.

  5. Hi There,
Is the entry fee of R2500 for 2 riders and if yes is there lesser entry fee for solo riders?

  6. Hi Geoff
Ridetheberg is a solo event so the entry fee of R2500 applies for 1 person.

  7. I’m looking forward to my first Ride the Berg! While you can’t predict the weather, any tips on appropriate riding gear? (9am temperature vs 12pm?)

    1. Hi Jan
The weather in the Berg is really changeable so come prepared for everything, but on a normal day temperatures range from about 7 degrees in the morning to about 20 degrees in the middle of the day.
Its generally not a rainy time of year, unless there is a cold front. We will send through a communication in the week of the race with the latest weather predictions.
      Look forward to seeing you.
      Loretta

  8. Hi Chris and Loretta

Thank you for a wonderful weekend of MTB riding. The trails were fantastic as were the marshals and the feeding stations.
The wind on day one added to the challenge, but that is what MTB riding is all about.
Only one item to improve on for next year, as a Grand Master and tailender there where no “gourmet wors rolls” left when I finished on both days – disappointing. (6 in class and 67 overall)

  9. Hi Hanru
The entry fee is R2800 and it includes lunch on both days. Routes are fully supported, with seconding tables, an army of friendly marshals and medical support. Riders also get a race garment, goodie bag, and a trail pass valid for your whole stay in the area.
    Hope we see you there!
    Loretta

  10. I have received a text message stating that the entry fee is R 2500 until the end of Feb. However when registering the fee is given as R 2800.

    1. Hi Iain
I am sorry that we had a bit of a muddle up with the Early Bird entries. We meant for them to be available until the end of Feb, so you should have been charged R2500. Please email us your bank details and we will process a refund. You can email info@alloutadventures.co.za
      Sorry for the error
      Loretta

  11. Hi Loretta. Are you going to publish final results?
I have told everyone that I finished day two, but the results that were pinned to the board don’t show a time for day two for me.
